ArchiPro | Designing For Life on Acreage

A rural property offers space to imagine a different way of living. Creating a home that belongs there begins with understanding both the landscape and the people who will call it home.

In ArchiPro’s The Architecture of Acreages: Design Guidelines for Rural Homes, Cadence and Co Design Principal Michael Kilkeary explores the considerations that shape a successful rural home, from the relationship between buildings and grounds to the balance between generous proportions and everyday comfort.

Thinking beyond the house

The feature considers the property as a whole. Views, orientation, outdoor spaces and the practical needs of rural life all influence how a home sits within its setting.

For us, that thinking begins with the client’s brief. At Georgetown Stables in Terrey Hills, a passion for horses and Western Riding informed a stable and lounge designed for spending time with horses, gathering with friends and enjoying quieter moments. The project brings architecture, interiors and construction together around a distinctly personal way of life.

Nearby, Charlotte Park combines family living with grounds that include stables, a pool and a kitchen garden, set against views through native forest towards Sydney.

A considered response to place

Our architectural design approach brings the construction team into the process early, alongside collaboration with landscape design partners. This helps resolve the relationship between the home, its setting and the practicalities of bringing the design to life.

That approach also informs our work in the Southern Highlands, where our Bowral studio has been established since 2013.
